An Alternative use to explosives

In such depressive times, when people are fighting for their rights and being killed by those who are supposed to protect them, here is something different.

Alexandre Farto, a Portuguese artist known as Vhils, has found an alternative use to explosives.

His work is quite impressive, here is his website http://alexandrefarto.com and a video of his work on repubblica.it http://tv.repubblica.it/home_page.php?playmode=player&cont_id=62909&ref=search

Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) - Salvador Dali
This painting,
Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) painted in 1936, is used to show the struggle of war that can sometimes be both self-fulfilling and self-mutilating at the same time .

Guernica - Tripoli

"What do you think an artist is? ...he is a political being, constantly aware of the heart breaking, passionate, or delightful things that happen in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war." — Pablo Picasso

The Guernica, painted by Picasso is an expression of pain, horror, anguish and disgust; what the artist felt after hearing the news of the terrible bombing of Guernica. I dedicate this blog post, to those losing their lives to fight for something that we tend to take for granted, freedom. 355km down south from where I live people are are being bombed by their own rulers.

Theo Jansen creates new creatures

I find this video uniquely weird and fascinating.  This has the potential to change how we travel. These creatures stand exactly on the line between art and technology. Just amazing, another video from Ted.com

Some have the balls

Don't know you but I find the prices in some auctions ridiculous. Someone definitely thinks that a Picasso's painting of his mistress is worth £25,241,250, I find it ridiculous. Don't think that the arts benefit from such auctions, especially in times of recession.

One day it will have to be officially admitted that what we have christened reality is an even greater illusion than the world of dreams. - Salvador Dali

and another quote i really like from the self appointed genius is.....The problem with the youth of today, is that one is no longer part of it.

Art Thieves and Art Scams

Came across this piece of news from Artreview.com, FBI hunt fake Guggenheim Countess. From a distance I love these stories. They seem to be coming out of some black and white movie. Yes, from a distance. Being scammed is not exactly something I like to be. In the art world these are very common. Regularly, I receive some sort of "not to be missed opportunity" where i have to send my work to some unknown gallery which most of the time does not even exist.

Most of these scams are easy to detect but then there are the occasional few that are well planned and if you're not careful, you end up being a victim yourself. For those artists who would like to read more, the (hopefully) dormant Art News Blog discussed the subject frequently and Artscam.com has has a check list of things to do to keep safe online and some more resources http://www.artscams.com/resources.html

Google Art Project

Over the last few days I visited the Moma Museum in new York, the Uffizi in Florence, the Tate in Britain and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Thoroughly enjoyable. No, I did not travel, I did it from the comfort of my Studio. How? Using Google Art Project. What is it? Quoting the site, its...

Paint your walls?

I have always been, and still am, very critical about the state of affairs in the art sector in Malta. Not only we are probably the only European country with no contemporary art Museum but the lack of initiatives, both from the private and public spheres are disheartening. We still live in a country where art is considered a hobby, something to do on a Sunday. Ah well .....
